Today's challenge: staying on-calorie

Planned fitness: double work-out with 45 minute leg work-out and 45 minute chest and triceps workout combined, 4 1/2 mile run, abdominals

Note on no caffeine and no sweet-n-low: Not really any headaches right now, I maybe had some slight ones yesterday morning. No stomach upset on my 5 mile run last night. I'm wanting to eat more food due to not having caffeine in my diet.

Note on picture: I made up some chicken in rice to have available to eat for snacks or meals. This way I can just grab one of these and know exactly how many calories I'm eating and know it's what my body needs. Each one has 3 oz of chicken breast, 105, 1/2 cup of rice, 85, and 1 tsp of Smart Balance light butter, 15, for a total of 205 calories.

Did You Know...

Caffeine Suppresses Appetite?

Hmmm... when I googled this topic last night, it seemed that everyone knew about this fact...except me.

Ok, you say, if I didn't know about this fact, why did I google it?

Well, because for the past two days, I can't. stop. eating. I roam the house like a lioness looking for something to kill. to eat.

I mean... I think about food and eating the Reeses Puffs cereal we have in our house. I think about the Halloween candy that I never really thought too much about before...I think about these things, and then I eat them.

Bad, Sunshine Mama!

But the big struggle basically started the very day that I cut my last cup of coffee. Yes, it took me two days to make a connection.

That was really the only thing that I have done differently. No caffeine and suddenly the last two days I've eaten 2,000 calories a day (I still have to update yesterday's food log) (can't wait) . Even on a bad day during the week I haven't screwed up this bad. Maybe on the weekend I'll screw up that bad but not two days in a row during the week.

So, finally last night, I googled that question, "Does caffeine suppress your appetite?"

And, guess what?

It does.

Conversely, taking caffeine away must then stimulate your appetite?

I'm not sure, but all I know is that my appetite has turned quite...shall we say...robust.

But, let's all recall why I've cut caffeine. Let's refocus. I cut caffeine to see if my stomach upset would stop during my runs. First I cut the protein shakes to see if they caused stomach upset. My stomach was still upset. Then, I cut out sweet-n-low, but I still had stomach upset. And now I'm cutting caffeine to see if that affects my stomach upset during my runs.

If I still had stomach upset after all this, the next plan was to look at the possibility that I was running when my stomach was in the middle of digesting.

Well, here's an interesting kicker, I ran last night and felt like a million bucks. I felt fast, smooth and didn't really have upset stomach. I did have to pee and stopped someplace to go, but I didn't really have that aweful upset stomach feeling. So, I'll be continuing to conduct my "purely anecdotal test" for another week or so to see if my stomach upset goes away.

In the meantime, I need to come up with some new techniques for taming this hungry tiger inside me.

Maybe knowing what I'm up against will help.

Maybe I should just google that too.

  1. try green tea, or black tea, it will help you suppress your appetite too! Actually thanks, last night I went crazy on a binge(well not too crazy) but you just reminded me I didn't have my tea in the morning that would soo do it!

  2. Awww, that sucks...and how odd that the first thing every "diet" out there says is to cut out the caffeine. ;)

I am glad you're feeling better when running. Hmmm, maybe it is an adjustment period? Like caffeine withdrawl...???
TOM maybe? I want to eat *everything* the week before TOM.

You'll work it out - I have faith in you!

    Best wishes,
    Lynn

  3. I am a Google lover! Can't believe it all, but they give you a pretty good answer to some of life's biggest questions - such as how do you clean underneath the burner of a stove when stuff has gotten in there? Thank you, Google. It's pretty crazy that when you lose the coffee you get that hungry. Maybe that is another adjustment and that will fade too, like the headaches? Good luck my friend.

  4. i'm terrible about googling health-related things... i've self-diagnosed myself with many illnesses, lol.

i hope this is the answer. as much as i'm sure you'd rather continue to enjoy a little coffee every now and then, it's much nicer to have an answer and plan/rules as to what you have to do to stay feeling good. have you added the protein drinks back in? maybe that will help re-suppress your appetite?
