Well, folks it had to happen. I met a morning with no weight loss. But not to worry, I still have two full days before Monday morning to see if I will lose five pounds in seven days.

Today's challenge: snacking, and working through those darn snacking urges.
Note on picture: I have crackers like these Toll House light flaky butter crackers to feed to Stavesacre to help him gain weight. But what makes him gain weight will also make me gain weight. So, I tend to cave in throughout the day to one here and one there. These things add up.
Hmmm...maybe I shouldn't be putting this pict out there.
Why Calorie Counting Works

Why can I lose weight counting calories and I can't when I don't? Here's a better question...why is calorie counting so much more effective for me for losing weight than when I don't?

Last summer I trained for a half-marathon. I was running a lot, weight training, doing sit-ups, but I wasn't losing any weight. How much was I eating? I don't know...Maybe I felt like I didn't have to watch what I ate because of all the physical activity I was doing. Maybe because of that I wasn't creating a calorie deficit (which is what you need for weight loss to happen no matter how much you exercise).

Don't get me wrong, the running was helping me feel better, the weight training was toning my arms and body, and the abs were bringing in my stomach...but those changes were hidden under the weight I was still carrying.

If you want to save money for a vacation...what do you do? You keep track of how much money you have so you know how much you have to put aside into the savings account.

How much money do you think you'd save if you tried doing it without knowing how much money you had? or Where you spent the money?

Silly right? Who would do that and expect to actually save any money? You'd be lucky if you didn't overspend conducting business that way.

It's the same concept.

When you know your calorie limitations and keep track of them throughout the day, then you will have a better chance of hitting your mark rather than completely missing it.

And to top it off, even if you miss the mark...like I have all week and go over your calories by a few hundred a day, you will still lose weight, because it's so much less than what you were eating before.

Another reason calorie counting works is that for some reason the very act of having to write down every single thing you eat...makes you think twice, so to speak, before eating something.

Calorie counting, also allows you to strategize. Once you start doing this you will notice yourself looking back at what you've eaten in the past week. You will start looking for ways to get the most bang for your buck...so that you can eat more but with fewer calories attached to it.

Take for example the coffee I started out with this week. I was putting 75 calories of sugar and creamer in it. I drank this 2 to 3 times a day. That's 225 in coffee calories alone. So, I took out the 45 cal. of sugar and replaced it with sweetner. Bam, I'm at 90 calories versus 225 calories.

The lefse I use is actually high calorie at 120 cal a piece. When I go shopping, I'll replace it with lefse that is 30 calories per two pieces and cut my calories for that to 60.

But you wouldn't be able to make these little adjustments unless you had a record of the food you ate and how many calories were in it.

And you guessed right, the longer you count calories the easier it will be to stick to your diet, because you will begin to figure out lighter substitutions for the things you like. And even better those lighter substitutions will allow you to devote more calories to food that may not be "light" at all.

And finally, let's put out a reason that calorie counting works that may not be talked about.

You don't have to wonder or hope if you ate too much or too little. You know, because you are keeping track of what you are putting in your mouth.

It feels good to know that you are in control of your eating situation and that it is actually YOU who is creating the weight loss in your life.

Suffice it to say...counting calories will give you the results you probably never expected. It's not impossible. Weight loss is just around the corner. The day I started counting calories last Monday, was the day I embarked on a so far...four pound weight loss in five days.

You can do it too. Better yet, lets do it together.

20 pounds in 10 weeks...this could be fun.
