Sunshine Spectacular...(Diet) Desperado Song

Hi, My name is Sunshine Mama, and I just lost 20 pounds in 10 weeks!

(Diet) Desperado
(Thank you Eagles)

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You been out over-eatin' for so long now
Oh, it's a hard thing
To take control and stop cheatin'
And start counting cal-0r-ies
If you don't know how

Don't you grab that extra helpin'
It'll be on you later
You know that holdin' back is always your best bet.

Now it seems to me, some fine food
Has been set at your table
But you only want the food that makes you fat.

Desperado, oh, you aint gettin' no lighter
Your pain and your stresses are not solved with food
And control, oh control, well, that's just what your needin'
Restriction is freedom in more ways than you know.

Do you cover up in the summer time?
Do you wish it'd snow, so your rolls would hide?
It's hard to tell your waist line from your hips
You're losing all your confidence
Ain't it funny how weight chases all that away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down and start loosin' with us today

It may be tough, girl, as a diet desperado
You better let yourself love you...it's never too late.

Whistle While You Whittle

Do any of you remember the song that the dwarves sang as they went off to work after they left Snow White in their cottage?

Whistle While You Work
Whistle While You Work...

I changed it to Whittle, because that's what I feel like I'm doing to myself with all these abdominals and sit-ups that I've been doing for the past two weeks. There was only one day that I missed doing my sit-up routine.

And I have to tell you, it's been challenging to keep up on doing all these sit-ups. I initially wanted to split up my sit-up routine to once in the morning and once at night, but have ended up just saving them all for the night. So, at night I end up doing 450 sit-ups in one sitting.

Talk about a chore. I'm not doing any whistling. Some nights it was really hard to get those sit-ups in. I didn't feel like doing them. And actually it was the side-sit-ups that really burned the most. But now that I'm getting closer to the end of these 10 weeks, I think my waist has been getting smaller.

I think the whittling is working. I've lost 2 inches on my waist in two and a half weeks.

I may not be whistling while I'm whittling, but I'm definitely whistling at myself the next morning when I wake up and my stomach feels flat and sleek---er. :)

So, here's the scoop, folks. I've decided to indulge you all with a few photos of myself. One or two after shots and a few before shots.

I think this is the first time in my life...when I have actually taken pictures of myself for the sole purpose of showing other people the results of my dieting and work-out efforts.

So, Sunshine Mama will be showing herself soon, first thing Monday morning.

Grip Your Goal With Superglue

Right now I am gripping my goal with all my might. I have a death grip on it. A strangle hold on the notion that I'm going to lose 20 pounds in 10 weeks.

When I decided to blog about this goal, it was like spreading super glue on the palms of my hands. And now that I'm so close, I've locked onto my goal, with the super glue creating an air-tight seal.

Ok, so enough about gripping.

I just hope that 20th pound drops by Monday morning. If it hasn't dropped by Sunday morning, I shall be employing a technique that I will reveal if need be as one last attempt at hitting that weight.

If I don't hit 20 by Monday, it won't be because I didn't try.

Before this blog came along, like anyone else, I would often times have to re-form my goals because of some birthday party I attended where I over-ate, or if I went out of town and overeating there messed it up. Or heck, just the stresses of life in general is sometimes enough to derail you from your goals. Each time this happened, I would have to restructure my goal again...and change the predicted completion date.

Through this method, I would eventually meet my weight loss goals. Like I talked about in yesterday's post, I kept trying. In fact, that's how I know I can lose 20 pounds in 10 weeks.
But I will have to say... this is the first time, where I've had an on-line group of supporters actually watching my every move. And quite, honestly, I think the accountability is allowing me to do even better.

I echo Jack's post yesterday about allowing other people to help you out. To encourage you. To support you. It really does make a difference. I think it's made a difference in my success so far.
I was just talking about this the other night with my husband, and I figured out that it's been four years since my weight has been down this low.

Four years, people!!

This is no small feat. I directly attribute this to being accountable through this blog and for your support.

So, if this blog is the superglue, then you guys are the cement.

If you can't grip it all by yourself, maybe having someone there to help steady your grip is all the difference you need...to succeed.

So, start your blog today?

(That was for you, dad)

Today's challenge: Staying hydrated and on calorie.

Planned fitness: 3-mile run, My abdominal routine twice

Note on picture: Do you ever feel like the lone pancake trying to be little while the other pancakes look on? We had pancakes the other day and my husband crafting a few little pancakes seemed funny and unnatural when looking at the regular size of the other pancakes. If it's not trying to look smaller, then it's eating smaller portions that will make us stand apart from a culture whose restaurants put enough in one portion to feed three people.

My Hot Date With Gym

How do you all like this title? Does the red color add even more hotness to it?

This came to me after I couldn't think of the one I wanted to use. Gym is a mood changer. He makes you feel better, he gives you good ideas and he helps you lose weight.

Yah, so go make a date with Gym. Your husband won't even mind.

But, actually I've been wanting to write this article for a little while now and after what happened yesterday, well...made it seem like the perfect time.

Life is so hectic. So stressful sometimes. Meeting with Gym yesterday seemed especially tough. The kids (the four younger ones) were being naughty. It was hot and muggy outside, and I'd been with the kids ALL day and was up to HERE with their shenanigans.

So, by the time I got to see Gym and handed Our Darling Kids to the child-watch people, I felt tired and worn out before I even got in to do my work-out. With about an hour and fifteen minutes to work-out, I felt like there was no way I was going to relax enough to enjoy Gym or reap his many benefits.

But, as usual, the most amazing thing happened. After only about five minutes with Gym, I completely forgot about my children. Children...what children...I have kids?

Well, at least the four younger ones. I weight lift with my 14-year-old daughter.

She began telling me about her day at high school. I said "hi" and had small talk with a few regulars who also date Gym and I before you know it I was on my way to a better mood.

After I weight lifted, we ran for a few miles, and I learned even more about my daughter's day. During the run, I calculated in my mind my next goal after this 10 weeks is finished.

When I finally returned 75 minutes later to pick up my naughty children, I noticed thinking that they didn't seem so naughty after all. I felt happy, energized, and had a brilliant idea for my next goal.

Wow. All that with only an hour date with Gym? Now that's a hot date.

I think you all know my point. Exercise is a mood-changer, it makes you think more clearly, plus there's this other side benefit...it helps you lose weight.

So, when you hit one of those days when it feels like your crawling and clawing your way to meet with Gym...keep pushing to get there. Be encouraged.

Gym has sweet little surprises waiting for you.

Reflecting On You

When I say "you" I mean the plural form of you all.

I was reading over some of the comments from a recent post and one of my blog followers, Sunshine Meg, suggested that I spend part of this tenth week reflecting on this whole process of losing weight and posting about it.

So, I did what she said, last night, and the first thing I began thinking about was the connections that I have made with the diet/work-out/weight loss community. Just today, Michelle decided to become a follower, (thank you, Michelle,) which means I have 24 followers.

When I started this blog, I wasn't looking for followers, really. This was just a kind of side blog in addition to my family blog. I saw making a blog as a opportunity to show other people what I do to lose weight. I've lost weight so many times before with all these babies I have. I could see that people were wondering what I did, so putting it in blog form was a way to perhaps help someone else get started or give them some good ideas that I would use to lose weight.

So, when I was reflecting tonight, I actually got a little teary. Because what I didn't expect is to receive such sincere encouragement and feel like I've become part of a team with this diet/work-out community. It's been so nice to interact with you and receive your words of affirmation. I've enjoyed reading your blogs and feeling inspired by your desire to better yourself.

Dieting and dropping weight can be a tough road. There have been many times that I have tried to start my diets and then have been derailed one way or another. But trying to be healthy and fit is the only thing I know how to do. I think I'll keep trying till the day I die even if I go off track here and there.

And funny I should say that because that really is the one thing that will make you succeed.

"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again."

If you dream to lose weight and be a certain weight, don't give up. Don't give up trying.

So, thank you all for inspiring me with your dreams, for chasing your dreams and not giving up.

Together we can do this.

How To Manipulate Your Metabolism

Let me guess...this is the post you've all been waiting for.

I have actually touched on this topic in other articles, but since I'm in the final days of my ten weeks on this diet, now seems like a good time to bring this up again.

What I am doing this week involves me manipulating my metabolism in such a way as to make it think that I'm not starving myself so that I don't gain weight. This is a technique that body builders will use to drop the fat and to bring out more definition in their bodies. If my body thinks it's being starved, it will slow down its metabolism and start conserving fuel, which is the exact opposite of what I want it to do.

Actually I have been manipulating my metabolism all nine weeks, but this week it's especially important that I follow the plan because I'm dropping my calories by 20 percent.

Basically what I am doing is eating five to six small meals a day so that I'm asking my body to digest something every few hours throughout the day. Every time I have a small meal, my body sends a little signal to my brain that says everything is hunky dory...don't conserve fuel, in fact rev it up some more.

The trick is, of course, is that I've included a smaller amount of calories in each meal. Another important trick in this whole metabolism game, is I'm including quality food in each small meal. I'm including lean protein and good carbohydrates. I'm actually giving it the core energy it needs to function.

During the week, when I am weight lifting and working out, I make a special point to consume two protein shakes a day and also a decent level of protein during two of my meals. My body needs every gram of the protein I consume to build the muscle that I'm trying to build.

That leads me to the second plank of manipulating my metabolism. The more muscle mass that I can build, the higher I drive up my metabolism. So, for example, instead of burning 50 calories per hour of just sitting around, I burn 75 calories per hour of sitting around.

This increase of muscle mass leads me to the next wonderful truth. When I finally do reach my goal weight, I can consume more calories because my body needs more energy to support that greater muscle mass.

This is why younger children have such high metabolisms, their bodies are growing and they're building muscle. After we stop growing, unless we do something to keep that muscle, we start to lose it. And lost muscle means you have to eat fewer calories to stay at the same weight.

The final key to manipulating your metabolism, is to make sure you're drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day. Because your body is working on a reduced number of calories, you really need to give it all the edge it can have and that is plenty of water to support your major systems. We're made up of 75% water. Any small dent in your water table will impair your body's ability to function. Then, it will do the same thing it does with starvation. If it doesn't have enough water, it will send a signal to your brain to start retaining water. Water retention equals weight gain or no weight loss.

Besides, you feel better when you're well-hydrated. Would it help if I said you probably even look better being well-hydrated with all that extra moisture in your skin?

But folks, I'll have to be honest with you. I've never actually dropped down to 1,100 calories before. So, I'm making sure that I space out my meals throughout the day, and plan my work-outs inbetween my snacks and meals.

So, what do you think? Do you think you can handle eating food every few hours throughout the day?

Geeze, who would have thought you can actually lose weight eating all the time.

Today's challenge: Sticking to my work-outs despite the lower calorie input.

Planned fitness: 50 minute weight lifting leg workout, 2 mile run, my abdominal work-out twice today

Note on picture: This is your mouth. And this is your mouth on drugs. :) My sister made these caramel, chocolate chip brownies for our family gathering yesterday. They are sooo good. The last time she brought them I ate several, but yesterday I only ate one with a caloric estimate of 225. I ate this but was still able to stay within my 1,100 caloric range. Oh. And the mouth? That belongs to my younger brother. We always see food, but not usually accompanied with a mouth.

All, Nothing & Inbetween

When it comes to eating or doing some type of activity, how would you describe yourself?

Do you jump right in no holds barred? So, for example, when you're eating do you dive in and eat till your hearts content? Is is hard for you to just stop at one brownie when you could possibly have two, three or four?

Or when you're on a diet, this same tendency will cause you to bring your own food and eat only it when you attend a family function. This type of personality will stick to their work-outs and find whatever way possible to fit them in. Or if you're behind on your work-outs, you feel discouraged and just give up.

The only problem with this personality type is that you've focused so much energy in this one particular thing, other things get pushed aside.

This is my personality type, and blogging has brought it out even more. Also, for some reason, I really tend to go all out when it comes to working out, fitness, and sticking to a diet. So, one of the biggest challenges for me is trying to balance out this whole diet thing with the rest of my life. How do I do this and keep the house organized? How do I do this, but not to the point that it edges out enjoying my time at a family get-together.

Actually in the latest diet, I feel like I've developed some better balance. I'm weight lifting three days a week instead of five because I know that with my all or nothing personality I won't just give up if I can't get all five work-outs in, and trying to fit in five exerts less pressure on me. Three is more manageable for the long haul. (That and I'm not training for a Body Building Fitness competition.)

As for bringing my own food to family functions, I still believe that is important to do when keeping to a diet, but that's it's good if you are able to work in some kind of a treat.

But I've noticed that it isn't a good thing to try to fit in a treat unless you've been dieting for awhile and are able to control yourself to just one treat. It seems to me that the longer this goes on, the more control I have over stopping at just one treat.

So, I guess what I want to say in this post, is that I actually think it's good to start out your diet with an all or nothing attitude but then work toward being an inbetween personality when it comes to food. You want to get to the point of being able to stop at just one treat. But to get to that point, you need to work through some internal conversations with yourself and develop some strategies and goals that will help you to eat within a normal calorie range...after the diet's over.

That will be one of my next goals...to be inbetween.
